Before his conversion, the deepest desire of Francis of Assisi himself was to live the dubs life of virtue and chivalry. To a great degree, this ecesis of Francis was carried with him throughout his life. Since there are both vast differences and strike similarities, comparing and contrasting military ethos with Franciscan values is a rather broad ranging and daunting task. Rather than doing so by comparing the two subjects in a general A to Z fashion, I have chosen to narrow and give birth my focus to three specific points: service, obedience, and peace and justice.
The Franciscan believes that the means of service is to pay a debt owed to God for the many blessings and gifts He has bestowed upon us. This service extends to all mankind, but especially those most in need. The era in which Francis lived was very violent and this was certainly no different in his hometown of Assisi.
Because of these tumultuous times little boys grew up dreaming of becoming knights and chivalrously defending and serving others. Francis started execute acts of service to others long before the Lord spoke to him from the plunder at San Damiano. Some early examples of these acts are illustrated as follows. It is widely thought that he was involved, at a fairly adolescent age, in helping the Assisi militia sack La Rocca fastness ridding the village of imperial control. A few years later, he fought in that same militia against the rival larger metropolis of Perugia in a losing effort.
