The long-term causes were from the midst Ages up until 1939 when the Holocaust properly began. The longest-term cause was the medieval usance of anti-Semitism. Anti-Semitism was existent long before the Nazi society and in the Middle Ages Jews were often treated as outcasts by European society. They had no real homeland, which made them antithetical to other religions, and they travelled around as traders for some time. As Christianity spread Jews were often seen as the biblical Christ-killers which made oftentimes of the European community suspicious of them. As it was frowned upon by Christians to be a moneylender or even a banker plainly Jews were free to do this, it made them even much different from the Christians and made them seem obsessed with money. They were seen as pure evil.
In the 14th Century laws were passed which forced Jews to live in peculiarly made ghettos where the living conditions were awful and incredibly cramped. They were hated by much of Europes Christian population. There were anti- Judaic pogroms and the Jewish community was persecuted. However, from around 1790 to 1890 the Jews were slowly freed from the ghettos and given much more freedom. They gradually became a part of society again. Unfortunately, as they grew wealthier and roaring anti-Semitism also became more apparent as little successful people became jealous of them.
