1: By the second scaffold scene, the story has revealed Dimmesdale as Pearls pay back to the reader, but the Puritan community still lacks this knowledge. 2: When Hester is in the governors garden to persuade not to take Pearl from her. She asks Dimmesdale to shop at her position. Readers know that Dimmesdale and Hester are partners in sin, but the Characters do not.
