A Failure in strategical Command: Jefferson Davis, J.E. Johnston and the Western Theater

This paper looks at the decision of pardner President Jefferson Davis in November of 1862 to appoint everyday Joseph E. Johnston to mold of the armies in the Department of the West and why that decision failed. It addresses three autochthonic reasons for this failure which were Johnstons unsuitability for the position, Daviss inability to allow a hyponym the appropriate freedom to pedagogy, and finally, the difficulties with the command structure of the Department of the West.
