Blum's book is well-written and informative. He gives us a deeper understanding of a man who was viewed as anathema to extremists on both sides of an issue, but he someway was able to find a middle-ground for his plans and aspirations. The book shows a human-centred portrait of a man who the author feels, in his main thesis, was well-intentioned but undone by his own firm ambition for power. Because of his lust to rule, Blum argues that "He let his leadership send away to demagoguery, his patriotism to perfervid chauvinism, his viable conservatism to a creek akin to fascism. He wrecked his part, wounded men he had trust most, deceived the people who trusted him. All this he did, persuaded that he had to" (160). If anything, the picture of Roosevelt that emerges in The Republican Roosevelt is a man with little regard for the law and Constitution if they stood in the way of doing what he felt he had to do to maintain power and control.
