The Chosen is a tommyrot about a friendship amid a Hasidic Jew named Danny Saunders and a more liberal teenager Reuven Malter. It takes place in Brooklyn at the end of World War II. At the first-class honours degree of the novel, both boys are fifteen years old and cognize near one another, but because they go to separate yeshivas they support never met. The boys meet during a baseball feeble between their two schools, in which Danny confronts Reuven and calls him an apikoros, meaning he is a Jew who denies the base tenets of his faith.
During the game, Reuven pitches to Danny who hits the ball back at him, hitting him in the center and shattering his glasses. Reuven is taken to the infirmary where he must nonplus for a week while his eye heals. Danny visits Reuven in the hospital to apologize, but Reuven is bitter and confrontational, so they argue once more. Danny visits a second time and confesses that he had to win the ball game because of his father. The two begin to discuss the Talmud and soon become friends.
