Mrs. Dalloway

In Mrs. Dalloway, Virginia Woolf creates a portrait of a single sidereal day in Mrs. Clarissa Dalloways life. When we meet this woman, she is preoccupied with the last-minute details of ships company preparation while in her mind she is something much more than a perfect society hostess. In the first scene, Clarissa is walk of life around London on a mission to spoil flowers for a party she is hosting that evening. We can learn a bulk about Clarissas identity just by following her contract of thought as she walks. Clarissa has been described as vain, shallow, limited and clubbish because of her movements. However, Virginia Woolf makes Clarissa Dalloway the vehicle for an expression of transcendence in this novel. Transcendence is an action of rising above, extending beyond, or surpassing limits or boundaries.
Clarissa struggles to balance her intimate life with the away world. Clarissa never lets go of the doubt and trouble she feels about the choices she made which shaped her life, especially her decision to attach Richard instead of Peter Walsh. Even though she knew life would be difficult with Peter as his self-obsession and neediness would have suffocated her, she has a dear for an upper-class life.



On the way to the flower shop, she runs into a equalize of friends and we discover how shy she actually is through the phone line amongst her internal thoughts and the internal thoughts of those she encounters. She is very reserved on the outside while on the inside things are very meddling and exciting. While some may see her as shallow, we as the audience are able to see her rich inward life and constant contemplation, not to mention how her mind wanders from point to topic. I feel we see a huge contrast in Clarissas actual character and her character as perceived by others. She has been known to express prudish remarks.
